Orienation, First Day & What To Bring
Clerkship orientation: Orientation is at the UW at 8:00AM on the first day of your clerkship. The room number is on the Didactics page. Room information may change at the end of each rotation, so be sure to check the table the weekend before you begin.
After orientation: Report to ENI. At the front desk on the 3rd floor, tell one of the receptionists you are here for your neurology clerkship and ask them to alert Dr. Burdick.
Directions:
From Seattle and points South: Take either floating bridge (I-90 East or WA-520 East; toll applies on 520) to I-405 North. Take exit 20B off I-405 North for Totem Lake Boulevard. At the fork, stay to the right to go towards Totem Lake Blvd. At the first light after the underpass, continue straight onto 120th Ave NE. At the top of the hill, turn right onto NE 128th St. The DeYoung Pavilion will be on your right.
From Shoreline and points North: Take I-405 South to exit 20 for NE 124th St. Turn right onto NE 124th St. Take the next right onto 116th Ave NE. At the top of the hill, turn right onto NE 128th St. Continue straight across 120th Ave NE. The DeYoung Pavilion will be on your right.
Parking:
There is free and ample parking underneath the DeYoung Pavilion. Once you have entered the driveway to the DeYoung Pavilion, proceed down the ramp to P1 or P2. Please park in a spot marked with a yellow dot, to leave other spots open for patients.
Equipment to bring: White coat and name tag, reflex hammer, tuning fork (128Hz), stethoscope, (Ophthalmoscope recommended).
Site Expectations
General: Students are expected to spend four and one-half days per week at EvergreenHealth Medical Center. One-half day is reserved for Thursday didactics at UW.
Wear your UW ID badge (EvergreenHealth will not issue a separate one).
The dress code for the site is professional; white coats should be worn; ties are optional for men.
The computer system can be accessed by the students. Christine Abraham will ensure your access. There is not specific training for students but EvergreenHealth uses a Cerner-based EMR very similar to the UW system.
Faculty: During the 4-weeks you will interact with several of the faculty.

Dr. Burdick is the clerkship site director. He will observe student’s performance of the neurological examination within the first two weeks of the rotation, and provide feedback. To ensure mastery of the neurological examination, it is expected that a second observation will be conducted before the end of the month. The clinical mini-CEX can be performed with Dr. Burdick or any of the clinic preceptors. Please tell the site director if you have any specific goals for the month so that your experience is as good as possible.
Inpatient experience: The inpatient neurology team sees a wide range of acute neurologic disorders. Students are expected to see 2-5 inpatients per week on average. The student is expected to follow their assigned patient from time of consultation until discharge or the resolution of the consult issue, writing daily progress notes. A reasonable guideline is to follow 1-3 patients at any time. There are no weekend or night call responsibilities.
Clinic experience: A combination of three different learning models will be employed in clinic. In the autonomous model, the student sees the patient first and then presents to the preceptor. In the shadow model, the student will follow the preceptor and observe different patient interaction styles. The final model allows the student to evaluate the patient, but in the presence of the preceptor, which definitely provides the opportunity for the most thorough feedback. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Other opportunities include observing EMGs, EEGs, etc. Depending on student interest, it may be possible to arrange an experience with a neuropsychologist during the month. Clinic typically runs from 8 AM to 5 PM. There are no weekend or night clinic responsibilities.
Dr. Burdick will provide you with a weekly schedule at the start of the rotation. It is expected that 1 week will be spent on the inpatient side and 3 weeks on the outpatient side.
