Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Program

The clinical neurophysiology fellowship program at the University of Washington is a one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship designed to develop clinical proficiency in clinical neurophysiology.

Program Details

Clinical neurophysiology (CNP) fellows elect to focus on one of three tracks: EEG/Epilepsy, Neuromuscular Disease, or General CNP track. In addition, the CNP fellow will gain exposure to subspecialties outside the selected area of concentration, including Sleep Medicine and/or Intraoperative Monitoring. Exposure to research in clinical neurophysiology is supported and highly encouraged.

In the EEG/Epilepsy Track, fellows become proficient in the diagnosis and management of epilepsy, interpretation of the entire spectrum of EEG studies (outpatient, ambulatory, scalp and intracranial video-EEG monitoring, ICU monitoring), and the interpretation of evoked potentials (EPs). Adult EEG/Epilepsy CNP fellows spend 9 months in adult EEG/Epilepsy at the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. One month is spent at Seattle Children’s Hospital studying pediatric EEG. Pediatric EEG/Epilepsy CNP fellows spend 9 months at Seattle Children’s Hospital and one month in adult EEG/EP at the University of Washington Medical Center. The remaining two months are spent on a secondary focus of choice, in Intraoperative Monitoring, Sleep Medicine, or Neuromuscular Disease. EEG/Epilepsy CNP fellows participate in a year-long half-day continuity clinic in Epilepsy at Harborview Medical Center. Didactics covering essential topics related to EEG/Epilepsy are held regularly throughout the year, in addition to weekly epilepsy patient management conferences.

In the Neuromuscular Disease Track, fellows become proficient in the diagnosis and management of neuromuscular disease and in the performance and interpretation of electromyography and nerve conduction studies (EMG/NCS). Neuromuscular Disease CNP fellows spend 10 months at the University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital. The remaining two months are spent in adult EEG/EP at the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. Neuromuscular Disease CNP fellows participate in a year-long, half-day continuity clinic at the University of Washington Medical Center. Regular didactics including muscle and nerve pathology review sessions are held throughout the year.

In the General CNP Track, fellows receive balanced training in both epilepsy/EEG/evoked potentials and neuromuscular medicine, with time split roughly equally between the two services. Outpatient clinical exposure and didactics are comparable to those of the other two CNP tracks.

The above tracks have some flexibility, and schedules can be tailored to the interests of the individual fellow.

Two-Year Training Pathway

Candidates may apply for a one-year fellowship in either Clinical Neurophysiology (CNP) or Epilepsy or pursue a two-year combined training pathway by completing both ACGME-accredited fellowships consecutively at the University of Washington.

Eligibility

Applicants must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited Neurology or Child Neurology residency program, or an equivalent accredited Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Neurology or Child Neurology residency program, before the fellowship start date.

Applicants must be eligible for appointment to a University of Washington graduate medical education training program. Eligible applicants include U.S. citizens, permanent residents, Canadian citizens, and qualified international medical graduates. Applicants requiring visa sponsorship must be eligible for ECFMG-sponsored J-1 visa status in accordance with UW Medicine Graduate Medical Education policies.

Current Recruitment

  • Pediatric Clinical Neurophysiology Fellow (July 2028 start): Recruitment is anticipated to begin January 2027 through the NRMP Match.
  • Adult Epilepsy Fellow (July 2029 start): Recruitment is anticipated to start January 2028 through the NRMP Match.
