About Us
Claire J. Creutzfeldt, MD
Principal Investigator
Associate Professor, Department of Neurology
Dr. Creutzfeldt received her medical degree from the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, and completed her neurology residency, stroke fellowship, and post-graduate training in Palliative Care at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Her research focuses on integrating palliative care into the emergent and ongoing care of patients with severe acute brain injury and their families, including people affected by stroke, traumatic brain injury, and cardiac arrest. She has been funded by the Cambia Health Foundation, the National Institute of Neurologic Diseases and Stroke, the National Institute of Nursing Research and the National Institute of Aging.
My favorite place to be is in the mountains. Ideally on my bike or on my skis.
Nia Stewart, BS
Research Coordinator
Nia studied neuroscience and human rights during her time as an undergraduate at the University of Washington. After graduating in 2022, she worked with the Neurological Vocational Services Unit at Harborview to provide services to individuals living with neurological disabilities. In addition to her work with the Creutzfeldt Lab on the ‘Support After Stroke’ study and managing the UW side of the LOTUS pilot trial, Nia has also helped to investigate racial disparities in healthcare as a Research Coordinator for UW Psychology.
Outside of research, I enjoy creative makeup looks, cooking new recipes, volleyball, swimming, and absurdly long video essays.
Karla Aguilar Welches, MD
Research Assistant
Karla is a medical professional from Guatemala, who graduated from Rafael Landivar Medical School in 2022. During her studies, she developed a profound interest in neurology, conducting her thesis project on neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with traumatic brain injuries. Additionally, she was involved in voluntary work and was part of the International Federation of Medical Students, striving to implement research as part of medical education in third-world countries. Now residing in Seattle, she is committed to advancing research and advocating for the Latin community. With ambition to pursue a residency in neurology or psychiatry, she aims to positively impact the medical field and her community.
Outside of work, I enjoy going on hikes with my dog, dancing, working out and traveling.
Kaley Dugger, BA
Research Assistant
Kaley graduated from Seattle University in 2019 with a degree in Biology and minor in Psychology. Out of college, Kaley worked with Dr. Creutzfeldt on a previous research study before spending two years in the non-profit sector helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities get connected with resources and support. Kaley is back working with Dr. Creutzfeldt because she loves working with patients and families during moments of great vulnerability and striving to improve the support they receive in the ICU and beyond. She will be starting medical school at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA fall of 2024.
Outside of work, I enjoy playing wheelchair rugby, thinking about interior design, and going on long walks at my favorite Seattle parks.
