What To Bring & Orientation
Equipment to bring: White coat and name tag, reflex hammer, tuning fork (128Hz), stethoscope, (ophthalmoscope recommended).
First day & site orientation: Contact the clinic staff to find out when and where to arrive on your first day. A photo ID must be worn at all times in the work places. Office hours are from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.
Clerkship orientation video: Watch the away student orientation video on the Distance Learning page. You will need to refer to your Pocket Syllabus (see below) when viewing the video.

Course Requirements
Course requirements are listed below. Refer to the Distance Learning page for due dates.
Cases: Two case write-ups are due each week. Further information is available in the orientation video and on the Cases page. Your assigned case numbers are on the Distance Learning page. Please note that your assigned case numbers are different than for the Seattle-based students. Weekly case answers and video lectures will be available on the Distance Learning page on Thursdays after 1PM.
Patient log: You are required to log in the patients you have seen each week. The log is described in the clerkship orientation video. Additional details are on the Patient Log page.
Clinical & Bioethical Mini-CEX exercises: You are required to do both a clinical and a bioethical mini-CEX for this course. See the Mini-CEX page for details.
Presentations: Presentation requirements are described in the orientation video and are available on the Presentations page.
Final exam: Your final exam will be held in Spokane unless you tell the clerkship director otherwise. The scheduling/notification process runs through UW Testing Services and the contact email is somtests@uw.edu. See the Final Exam page for information about the exam.
Site Expectations
General: Students are expected to spend five days per week involved in education of neurology and the neurosciences. We are open for business at our main office (address above) typically M-F, 8am-5pm and if that is most convenient you can spend every day in our outpatient office. There are no weekend or after-hour patient care requirements.
The best place to park for the main office is in the open garage under the building. There is a staircase and elevator right next to the parking and you can take that to the 2nd floor. Our door is the first door off of the elevator. There is also lots of free parking on the street but we would prefer you leave the outside parking lot in front of the building to the patients as parking is limited for those who need easy access.
The dress code for the site is business casual. Please wear your ID badge.
It is strongly recommended that your bring a laptop for this rotation. We have a very easy-to-use EHR that is cloud-based (https://hellohealth.com/ehr/features/). Please review ahead of time so you are familiar with the system. You do not need to load anything on your computer. On the first day we will give you a password.
Faculty: During the 4-weeks we hope you have exposure to the entire faculty in our neurology practice.

Clinic Experience: Selkirk Neurology PLLC is the largest independent neurology practice in Spokane and the Inland Northwest. We are a tertiary referral care center and serves patients from central Montana through central Washington and the Idaho panhandle. Students are exposed to fundamentals of neurology with a focus on outpatient neurology and some exposure to inpatient neurology. We have a large volume of routine patient visits and as well as botulinum toxin injections, EMG, EEG, and other neurological procedures such as lumbar punctures that allows our students to build a solid foundation of neurology that provides a lifelong background for understanding neurology regardless of their ultimate career path. We also cover the fundamentals of neuroimaging in our rotation.
Our outpatient clinic offers up to 5 days per week of patients with providers who maintain full schedules with a variety of neurological disorders. Our students start out following one of our many providers then rapidly take on graduated structured role as student clinicians and increase their independence throughout the rotation. Constructive feedback is offered throughout the rotation to ensure our students learning styles are accommodated and they get the most they can out of the rotation.
